Surprisingly, the agency didn't balk at the cold call, and they were interested in seeing a written proposal. In what he called "one of the most difficult things in my life," Chu called Zou and laid out his plan. Zou, a strategic sports branding firm, has helped the NFL start flag football programs in several countries.ĭays after making his first inroads in China, Chu was a step closer to realizing his dream. Upon returning to the United States, Chu found a new Web site for Zou Marketing, where he had been looking for contacts for more than a year. The meeting lasted into the wee hours as the coaches picked each other's brains through a translator. Within the day, the guide introduced Chu to the coach of the country's five-man flag football champions. While in China on an adoption trip, Chu told his tour guide he wanted to help bring football to the country. The searches didn't provide many answers, untilMarch. Those ties led Chu, a Web technologies professor at Skyline College, to search for American football in China. "That may sound pompous, but to come in and lay down the foundation for football, which I'm so passionate about, in a place where I have such strong cultural ties, is just incredible."Ĭhu, 37, has adopted two daughters from China, and he maintains contact with relatives in the coastal province of Shandong. "It's like bringing water to the desert," Chu said. In the last nine months, however, the necessary contacts fell into place for Chu, who left for China this week to teach coaching clinics.
